After reading the beginning of Paleofantansy, I have to say that it is so far meeting my expectations in terms of content. Marlene Zuk presents evidence, claims, and theories in a manner that is scientific without being difficult for common readers to understand. At this point in the reading, she is helping the public understand the truths and misleading facts behind human evolution by providing the history and methods used to study humans and their ancestors.
In the very beginning of chapter one, Zuk briefly discusses a few misconceptions associated with the topic of evolution such as how many think evolution "proceeded in a straight line," and that evolution occurs with the intention of fulfilling a given purpose (22). This section really caught my eye because it is something we discussed in class in order to become aware of the general opinions on evolution. The author also mentions that evolution occurs with and without natural selection (24). I believe this comment addresses Hayley's question from the first post about discussing only natural selection as a means of evolution. I'm happy that Zuk, at the very least, lets readers know that there are other important modes of selection. I'm anxious to see if she divulges them further in the book.
The book has surprised me only in terms of the factual evidence being presented. I admit that I am ignorant to the spatial and genetic divergence of our species, so the information she has provided so far is quite enlightening. Seeing as how the book is pretty straight forward, it has not presented me with any insurmountable challenges yet. However, I anticipate this book presenting more ideas that will challenge my thinking in the best possible way.
